Generator Installation

Houston electricians for generator installation.

Gulf Coast power goes out. Hurricane season, thunderstorms, and the occasional transformer that decides Friday at 6 PM is quitting time. A properly sized standby generator with an automatic transfer switch keeps the fridge, AC, and medical equipment running — Chosen 1 Electric installs them across Houston, Pasadena, and the Ship Channel communities.

We start with a real load calculation, not a brochure's "whole home" claim. Undersized services get a panel upgrade first. Portable interlock setups are available when a full standby system isn't the right spend yet — see examples in our gallery.

Businesses that can't lose a cooler or a server room should also look at our commercial electrician scopes for critical-load panels.

  • Load calculation & right-sizing
  • Automatic transfer switch installation
  • Pad, gas line & utility coordination
  • Maintenance plans and annual testing

What's included

What this service actually covers.

  • Whole-home standby systems

Air-cooled and liquid-cooled generators sized to your critical (or full) load, set on a pad, with gas piping coordinated and an automatic transfer switch at the service.

  • Automatic transfer switches

Service-entrance and load-side ATS installs, bonded and permitted. Manual transfer and interlock kits for portable generators when that's the smarter first step.

  • Commercial critical-load setups

Restaurants, clinics, and shops that only need the cooler, POS, and lights covered — not every outlet in the building. Ties into commercial electrical distribution work.

  • Maintenance & annual load tests

Exercise schedules, oil changes, and yearly load bank or building-load tests so the unit actually starts when the grid doesn't.

When to call

Signs you need this crew.

Not sure if it's this service or something adjacent? Tell us what you're seeing — we'll point you to the right scope, whether that's this page or another under all services.

  • You've lost power more than once this storm season and you're done guessing
  • A home inspector or insurer flagged the need for backup power
  • You're remodeling and want generator-ready capacity built into a new panel
  • A portable generator is already on site and you need a safe interlock — not a suicide cord
  • Your business loses product or revenue every time CenterPoint blinks
How it works

From first call to labeled finish.

  1. Load study & site walk

We inventory what you actually need running and check gas availability, setback clearances, and service capacity. Request a quote with a panel photo if you have one.

  2. Permit & utility coordination

AHJ permits, gas line coordination, and any service upgrade required before the generator lands. We don't hang an ATS on a panel that can't handle the transfer.

  3. Install, commission, train

Pad, unit, ATS, startup, and a walkthrough so you know what the lights on the box mean. Then we schedule the first maintenance visit.

FAQ

Questions we get on generator installation.

Whole-home or critical loads only?

Depends on budget and what you refuse to lose. Critical-load panels cover HVAC, fridge, and essentials for less money. We'll show both options in writing after the load study.

Do I need a panel upgrade first?

Often yes on older 100A services — especially if you're also adding an EV charger. We'll say so before you buy a generator.

Natural gas or propane?

Natural gas is common along Houston city lines; propane is the play for properties without gas service. We size fuel accordingly and coordinate the plumbing side.
